Advertising is down, many covers are still available so please contact her if you are interested, and member support pages have help considerably so please continue. Dominica Cardenas asked about layout charges and the use of the Macintosh computer. Bert noted that Jo Ann Redditt is working very hard at reducing the expenses of the Barker. Code of Ethics – Rev. Alan Klessig asked if everyone had received a copy of the code of ethics. He also thanked Jim Carter for all his help. Rev. Klessig stated that he has been working on this for over a year. He stated that several years ago CSPCA did have a code of ethics and it was required for membership in the CSPCA. When we went into AKC it was found that the requirement of code of ethics was un-enforceable. The document that Rev. Klessig has been working on would be two-fold (Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct). The first part of the code of ethics would be requirements to join CSPCA and the second part would be the code of ethics for breeders. This second part would be voluntary. Rev. Klessig encouraged feedback and suggestions on the handout. The following members made discussion: Lois Carter, Ann Hickman, Dee Dee Wells, and Jeff Chamberlain.

Dog Sport Committee – Jane Baumann is not here but Bert would like to address this new committee. This committee would like to put more emphasis on other areas that dogs can be involved in to promote team sports (human and a dog). This would involve agility, fly ball, frisbee throwing, and dog dance sport etc. These activities are geared to more of the pet owners. We need to open up activities to the whole membership.

Futurity/Maturity Report – Ann Hickman reported that there were 219 litters nominated this year, 328 futurity and 148 maturity. The committee took in fees of $6,565, $1,317.75 for CSPCA entitlement, and $777.50 for expenses. The Futurity and Maturity total was $9,202.03. This is to present the Chinese Shar-Pei in a positive light to the public, and also to promote the idea that our Shar-Pei can perform a multitude of tasks. The committee has three levels of awards: Versatile Shar-Pei (VSP) a title where the dog has completed requirements from any two areas; Versatile Shar-Pei Excellent (VSPX) a title where the dog has completed requirements from three areas, one of which must be an advanced title in performance.; Versatile Shar-Pei Champion (VSPCH) a title where the dog has completed requirements from four areas and received its AKC or CSPCA Championship as well as advanced titles from two performance events, one of which must be another AKC or CSPCA approved event. *(Areas are conformation, obedience, tracking, agility, therapy dog, or certification for other performance events such as flyball, herding or hunting)

New Business - President Bert Hickman asked Jeff Mauk to discuss with the membership on the Boards decision to rescind the judges ballots. After much discussion the Board decided to re-send the ballots since the U.S. Post Office was not forwarding all mail onto Jocelyn Barker’s home address. The ballots are in the mail and the deadline for return is July 15, 2000. Questions were raised regarding time frame of judges judging prior to Nationals, judge’s selection two years prior to Nationals, and choosing hosting clubs two years in advance. Discussion was made by Dee Dee Well, Leslie Michael, Lee Arnold, Cyndi Skinner, Ann Hickman, Karen Kleinhans and Tom Ernst.

President Bert Hickman asked Bryan Timby to discuss entry fees for Nationals. Bryan stated that entry fee had not gone up since the mid 1980’s – all other expenses have continued to increased. We had to face the money crunch this year, as the National Club would have lost money this year. The following members made discussion: Del Murphy, Cyndi Skinner, and Gail Garrison.

President Bert Hickman asked Marilyn Vinson to discuss with the membership some of the accomplishments and what the Board plans to do in the future. These items include: therapy, versatility, Ad Hoc Committee for the Barker, established the Ernest Albright Award, directors will be writing columns in the Barker to keep the membership informed, monthly board meetings, establish Top Veteran Dog Award, President’s Alliance Committee, web page is being expanded and updated, e-mail balloting, and on-line advertising. Mara Snyder stated that in 1984 the Board voted to send Matgo Law a copy of the Barker for life. He had not received the Barker yet. Dee Dee Wells would like Matgo Law become a lifetime member of CSPCA. She also wanted to know if top dogs in Hawaii could receive special recognition since they are not able to compete with the mainland. Questions were also asked regarding the membership roster. Discussion was made by the following members: Mara Snyder, Donna Jordan, Dee Dee Wells, Debbie Bachand, Jo Ann Redditt, Pat Evetts, Lee Arnold, Lee Ernst, and Dominica Cardenas.

CSPCA Charitable Trust – Lee Arnold stated that he had an updated report. Grant 1301 was the original grant that was associated with the AKC Canine Health Foundation to find the DNA Marker for Amyloidosis. The study conducted by Dr. Gary Johnson and the staff of the University of Missouri of Columbia and has been completed. Dr. Johnson and his staff did not find a marker for Amyloidosis but will continue to do research. The National Institute of Health (NIH) to continue research for a DNA Marker for Amyloidosis has approached the Trust. Amyloidosis is not the number one disease in Chinese Shar-Pei today it is cancer. The Trust is also involved in two other projects: work with four other parent clubs to research elbow displasia and a proposal given to the AKC Canine Health Foundation Board to work with the University of California Davis to do research on mass cell cancer. The following members held discussion: Pat Evetts, Debbie Bachand, Deb McFarland, Tom Ernst, and Lois Carter.

Meeting adjourned at 10:20 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

Respectfully Submitted,  Georgette Schaefer  Secretary
