Description of CSPCA Awards & Recognitions

Various awards are presented at the Awards Banquet which is held each year at the CSPCA National Specialty Dog Show. You must be a member of the CSPCA to qualify for any of these awards. This is just a brief summary of the awards. The actual requirements and more information on any of these awards is available in the CSPCA Policy and Procedure Manual (PPM). It can be found in the "Member's Only" area of the CSPCA website.

20 YEAR MEMBERSHIPS

To recognize the club members for 20 years of continuous support of the CSPCA.

30 YEAR MEMBERSHIPS

To recognize the club members for 30 years of continuous support of the CSPCA.

AGILITY AWARDS

Each year the top Shar-Pei that have competed in Agility are recognized with awards. The AKC top agility dogs report only shows dogs competing at the highest level, so in order to receive recognition it is the responsibility of the owner/handler to keep up with the required information and submit it to the Agility Chairperson. You must send the information from each qualifying leg of a title—score, standard course time, actual time, and placement (if any) to the Agility Chairman by July 1 each year. Instructions for submitting information and rules can be found on the CSPCA website. On the home page, click on the Dog Recognition button, click on Agility, and then click on Agility Rules to obtain this information. First through fourth highest scoring places are awarded for the following classes:

AKC OUTSTANDING SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD

The AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award program was established in 2006 to provide each member club with an AKC Medallion to award to one of its own on a yearly basis.

This award honors those individuals who deserve special recognition that have made a difference in the sport of purebred dogs, embodied the AKC Code of Sportsmanship, and have been an active and valued member of the CSPCA. Medallions are awarded solely at the club’s discretion. The full details on AKC Code of Sportsmanship and how to nominate someone for this award can be found in the Policy and Procedure Manual, located in the "Member's Only" area of the CSPCA website.

CSPCA CANINE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD (CDSA)

This award was established by the CSPCA in 2008 as a way to recognize those Chinese Shar-Pei that have performed some exemplary act that has significantly benefited a community or an individual. The act must be so significant that it would be defined as extraordinary. For a dog to be eligible, it must be a pure bred Shar-Pei, and either registered or eligible for registration with AKC. The full details on how to nominate someone for this award can be found in the Policy and Procedure Manual, located in the "Member's Only" area of the CSPCA website.

CHIC AWARDS

This award recognizes the Shar-Pei that have taken all of the 5 required health tests and allow the results of the tests to be posted on the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals website. The tests are: Elbow Dysplasia, Hip Dysplasia, Patellar Luxation, Autoimmune Thyroiditis, and a CERF Eye Exam. You can find more information about this under the CHIC button on our website.

FIRST AWARDS:

The CSPCA recognizes the first Shar-Pei to earn a new title. It must be a title that has never been earned by any other dog in our breed, and the owner must be a member of the CSPCA in order to be recognized.

FUTURITY/MATURITY ENCORE AWARD

This award is presented to a dog that wins first place in its class in Futurity competition, then the following year it also wins first place in it’s class in the Maturity competition.

JUNIOR SHOWMANSHIP AWARDS

Top Junior Awards- These awards are given to the top boys and girls (at least 9 years old, and under 18 years old) showing Shar-Pei in Junior Showmanship classes during the year. The number of dogs defeated is recorded by the Junior Advisor from the AKC Awards records, and tallied at the end of the year. The Junior with the most accumulated points in each region (West, Central and East) is recognized by the CSPCA. Of these winners, the Junior with the highest number of accumulated points overall, is awarded an additional award of the Highest Overall Junior of the Year.

ERNEST ALBRIGHT JUNIOR HANDLER MEMORIAL GRANTS

This grant is divided into three different awards for Junior Showmanship. The full details on how to qualify and apply for each of these grants can be found in the Policy and Procedure Manual, located in the "Member's Only" area of the CSPCA website.

  1. The Westminster Kennel Club CSPCA Junior Handler Grant- The proceeds from this grant are to be used to defray the cost of entering and attending the Westminster Dog Show.
  2. The CSPCA Junior Handler National Specialty Grant- The proceeds from this grant are to be used to defray the cost of entering and attending the CSPCA National Specialty.
  3. The CSPCA Junior Handler National Specialty Grant- is available to every Junior Member attending the Annual National Specialty Show who meets the established criteria. Grant payouts are available in the amount of $150 and may be applied for and earned multiple years.

LIFETIME MEMBERSHIPS

Periodically the CSPCA Board of Directors will honor a member of the club with a Lifetime Membership in recognition of outstanding service to the Club and to the breed. Anyone that has been a member for 20 or more years may be considered for a lifetime membership. An individual’s contributions to the Club over the 20 years will be a determining factor for this membership.

OBEDIENCE AWARDS

Each year the CSPCA recognizes the top scoring obedience dogs for the year. All the dogs’ scores are tallied by the Obedience Chairman from the AKC Events and Awards Catalog. There is no need to apply for these awards. Awards are given for the first through third places with the top average scores of the three legs in the following classes:

  • Novice
  • Open
  • Utility

PAST PRESIDENT’S AWARD

To honor any past CSPCA president after leaving office.

RALLY OBEDIENCE AWARDS

These awards are presented by the same criteria as the Obedience Awards. The Rally Chairman tallies all the dogs’ scores from the AKC Events and Awards Catalog. Awards are given for the first through third places with the top average scores of the three legs in the following classes:

  • Rally Novice
  • Rally Advanced
  • Rally Excellent

RESCUE AWARDS

Many people throughout the country participate in Shar-Pei Rescue. It takes the efforts of many people to get the job done. At times there are volunteers who go above and beyond the normal call of duty. As a way to recognize such special contributions, the CSPCA Rescue Chairman asks for nominations for Rescue Awards. Nominations for the award are mailed to the Rescue Chairman by any member of the CSPCA, stating in 100 words or less, why the named person should receive a rescue award. All nominees must also be members in good standing of the CSPCA. Nominations must be received by the CSPCA Rescue Chairman by June 1 each year. The Rescue Chairman and his committee select the winners from the nominees.

REGISTER OF MERIT (ROM)

ROM awards are given to Chinese Shar-Pei that have produced the required number of champions to qualify for this award. Any Chinese Shar-Pei male owned or co-owned by a member of the CSPCA will automatically qualify for the title of "Register Of Merit" when he has a minimum of ten get which have earned their conformation championship title (not necessarily out of the same dam). And any Chinese Shar-Pei female owned or co-owned by a member of the CSPCA will automatically qualify for the title of "Register of Merit" when she has a minimum of five offspring that have earned their conformation championship title (not necessarily sired by the same male). The Chairman of this committee keeps the records and any dog that meets these qualifications during the year will qualify to be recognized at the Awards Banquet held in conjunction with the National Specialty the year following such eligibility.

THERAPY AWARDS

Any dog that has earned an AKC Therapy Dog title during the year will qualify for a Therapy Award. One must apply for this award in order to receive the recognition. Instructions of how to apply and the necessary proof of eligibility needed to send to the Therapy Chairman are listed on the CSPCA website. On the home page, click on the Dog Recognition button, then click on Therapy, and then click on Therapy Rules to obtain this information.

TOP DAM & TOP SIRE

To honor the top producing Chinese Shar-Pei sire and dam of each year.

TOP DOG AND TOP BITCH AWARDS

The purpose of these Awards is to promote the exhibition of Chinese Shar-Pei in the various Regional Shows and Specialty Shows as well as at the National Specialty. The top winning dogs at each Specialty show receives a point for each dog defeated. The Top Dog Chairman keeps a record for all the winning dogs, obtained from the AKC awards books. The Top Dog and the Top Bitch are recognized at the National Specialty Awards dinner. The official competition year is from January 1 to December 31. You can find the formula for calculating the points for this award in the PPM, under Top Dog Award. The PPM can be found on the CSPCA website, in the Members Only area.

TOP VETERAN DOG AND TOP VETERAN BITCH

To promote the exhibition of Veteran Chinese Shar-Pei in the Regional Shows, Specialty Shows and the National Specialty Shows, the points for these awards are tabulated solely on wins at those shows.

VALUED MEMBER AWARD

This award is a way that members of the CSPCA can recognize other members of the CSPCA for their contributions to the breed. The Valued Member recipient must be a CSPCA member. They may be selected for any single event or a long term contribution to the Chinese Shar-Pei breed. The person that wins this award is responsible for choosing the next winner. The winner is required to write a brief description of why they are choosing the next recipient of this award. It is also the winner’s responsibility to send the information in a timely fashion to The Barker’s editor.

VERSATILITY AWARDS

These awards are a way to recognize the versatility of the Shar-Pei. These dogs have titles in two or more areas of competition. One must apply for this award. Application forms and the rules required for application are available on the CSPCA website. On the home page, click on the Dog Recognition button, Click on Versatility, and then Versatility Rules. Complete instructions are listed, as well as how to send the necessary information to the Versatility Chairman.

WEB MASTER

To recognize the service provided by the webmaster upon retiring from the job

WILLIAM W. MORISON AWARD

This is the highest award that can be bestowed on any individual. It is an award to recognize that person who has dedicated his time, talent, effort and resources to the benefit of the CSPCA. This individual is one who has given to the Club reliably and unfailingly over time. Any member of the CSPCA can nominate any other member of the CSPCA for this award. The exact qualifications and details can be found in the Policy and Procedure Manual in the"Member's Only" area of the CSPCA website.

This Service Award is under the purview of the recipients of the William Morison Award, and they are responsible for receiving nominations and selecting future recipients. Only recipients of this award will become voting members for the William W. Morison Award Committee. The CSPCA recognizes the importance of this Service Award, and provides one page per calendar year in the Barker to call for nominations and announce new inductees. Any member in good standing may nominate a CSPCA member for the Morison Award based on the above criteria. There may be more than one (1) award given each year, and there may also be no award given in certain years. An explanation of 250 words or less as to why the nominee deserves recognition for this award must accompany all nominations. The CSPCA Awards Chairman will act as a liaison in working with the past recipients to facilitate the plaque and presentation process.
